The Catoctin SCD board recognized OCS Dairy, Little Creek Farm, LLC, and Joe Mangiafico, Jr. as award recipients at their August board meeting and awards luncheon. OCS Dairy, the O. Clayton Smith family was recognized as Cooperator of the Year for 2018. The installed over 14 acres of CREP plantings along with exclusionary fencing and watering facilities during the year and the farm was accepted into a preservation easement program through the Department of Natural Resources.
Little Creek Farm, LLC, the Shafer family received the Past Supervisors Award by installing the most best management practices during the past two years. A total of 19 practices were installed including stream crossings, stream fencing, a waste storage structure, and a covered feeding structure.
Joe Mangiafico, Jr. received the Taking Pride in Agriculture Award for 2018. Joe constructed a covered feeding structure to house dry cows and heifers to help prevent nutrients and sediment from leaving his dairy situated on Catoctin Creek. He also follows sound management practices in his farming operation to help contribute to improving water quality in Catoctin Creek.
